Words for Cannabis: 3 Things We Need Words for in the Cannabis Industry

Words for Cannabis: 3 Things We Need Words for in the Cannabis Industry

There are more than 1,200 slang words for cannabis.

And yet, there are still so many words that we’re missing from our cannabis lexicon.

And we’ll continue to need to evolve our language as long as the budding cannabis industry continues to grow and grow.

So without further ado, here are some words we still definitely need.

1. The kind of person who enjoys cannabis but doesn’t fit into a stereotype.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - words for cannabis

We’re all so used to calling people who enjoy cannabis “stoners” and “potheads”.

But because of cannabis’s history, those names still carry a stigma.

And what about the people who enjoy cannabis but don’t use it all the time? Are they still considered stoners?
What about people who never smoke but eat edibles all the time? Are they still considered “potheads”?

We think there needs to be a new word invented just for the kind of people who don’t fit into the typical stereotype of “stoner” or “pothead”.

We like the sound of cannabis connoisseur, or if you want to get hip with it, canna-connoisseur. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.

2. The kind of person who uses cannabis products but isn’t interested in getting high.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - words for cannabis

So here we have another group of people who love and support cannabis, but only use products that don’t give them that euphoric feeling that you get typically when consuming THC.

So these are your topical users and CBD fans.
Using a cannabis-infused salve or topical on your skin won’t get you high, and neither will a purely CBD product.

So even though these people aren’t getting high, there are a huge number of people using these products all the time!

They’re not “stoners” or “potheads”, right?

That’s why we think there needs to be a new word invented for this awesome group of people.

3. Another word for “vaping” that isn’t confused with e-cigarettes.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - words for cannabis

When we say “vaping”, you might think about the convenient, sleek, and potent cannabis vape pens.

Or, you may think about the clunky e-cigarettes that have nothing to do with cannabis.

Whether you’re a fan of e-cigarettes or not, we think this industry deserves a new word for vaporizing cannabis that isn’t so commonly confused with its nicotine counterpart.

We think “atomizing” would be a cool (albeit nerdy) alternative for vaping, since it technically does mean the same thing. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.

High Yoga: 3 Poses Perfect for Reaching an Elevated State

High Yoga: 3 Poses Perfect for Reaching an Elevated State

With 420-friendly yoga studios opening up around California, everyone is excited about getting bendy while they’re getting blitzed.

But if you’re new to yoga (and even if you’re new to smoking weed), we got you covered with some beginner yoga poses to practice when you’re high.

Let’s get started with some high yoga.

1. Mountain Pose

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - high yoga

This pose may look easy, but with the right intentions, it can be a great starting point for any yoga practice.

First, plant your feet into your mat, about shoulder width apart. Spread apart your toes, and grab the floor with them. Your feet should feel rooted to the ground.

With slightly bent knees, make sure your pelvis is neither curved forward nor back. Contract your abs, and tilt your pelvis underneath your tailbone. You shouldn’t feel any pressure on your lower back.

Now imagine that a string from the bottom of your feet is lifting through your body and up out of the top of your head. Lift your spine and roll your shoulders down and back so that you stand as high as a mountain. Keep your arms at your sides, and face your palms up or down. Whatever feels right to you.

Feel the sensations through your body from the pose as well as the effects of the cannabis, and be mindful of the present moment.

2. Warrior 2 Pose

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - high yoga

From mountain pose, Warrior 2 will expand you and open your body further.

Widen your stance and twist your hips so that you are facing one leg with the other behind you.

Then, slowly bend your front leg until it’s at a 90-degree angle, and your back ankle is at a 45-degree angle with the ground. Activate your abs, and tilt your pelvis under your tailbone so that your spine is straight.

Your front knee should be directly above your front foot, your back leg should be straight.

Lift your spine and gaze ahead, and slowly lift your arms until they’re parallel to the floor.

Keep your arms straight, and play with holding your palms up toward the ceiling or down toward the floor for a different stretch.

While high, this pose may challenge your balance but will help you to feel grounded, strong, and graceful. Enjoy some deep breaths in this pose before you come out of it. Feel free to come back to mountain pose and try getting into Warrior 2 with your opposite leg leading so that you can even yourself out.

3. Bridge Pose

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - high yoga

Start by lying on your back with your feet planted onto the floor. Inch your heels up as closely as you can to your bum, and then lift your hips until your muscles feel engaged, but if you feel any back pain, lower your hips until it’s comfortable.

Tuck your shoulders underneath your body, squeeze your shoulder blades together, and clasp your hands together on the mat underneath you.

Your chest should feel nice and open so that you can breathe deeply into this pose.

Cannabis can help with being totally present and in your body during your yoga practice. Don’t be afraid to push yourself with your high yoga practice, but don’t push yourself too far or until you’re uncomfortable. Move in a way that feels good to you.

What’s your favorite strain to stretch with? Let us know in the comments section below!

5 Interesting Things You Didn’t Know About CBD

5 Interesting Things You Didn’t Know About CBD

What is CBD even?

To put it simply, CBD is one of the MANY components to the cannabis plant that has a positive effect on us.

Due to its popularity in 2019, people are seeking and learning more about CBD as the seeming be-all-end-all cure for many psychological or physical issues that modern medicine hasn’t been able to help them with.

While we can’t exactly vouch for that, we can say that we have seen some amazing leaps in the health and well-being of many of our customers.

But we don’t blame people who do believe that! Especially after the federal government recently charged a major pharmaceutical drug distributor for its role in perpetuating the opioid epidemic.

CBD has been known to improve anxiety, depression, pain, insomnia, acne, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and more.

But there’s still so much about CBD that we just don’t know. So we wanted to share some interesting facts about our favorite cannabinoid.

1. CBD is safe for children and pets.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - CBD (cannabidiol)

Unlike its psychoactive counterpart, THC, CBD is totally okay for kids and our furry friends to use.

One of CBD’s most exciting applications lies in the results we’ve seen when it comes to children with epilepsy.

There have been children and adults who were experiencing dozens of seizures every day who have found that CBD can dramatically decrease the number of seizures they experience daily.

And if that wasn’t heart-warming enough, CBD can help pets too!

Like humans, CBD has a number of healing properties that work for our furry friends.

Some of the issues that CBD has been known to alleviate for pets include inflammation, anxiety, pain, skin issues, fearfulness, and many other issues.

Your fur baby will thank you!

2. Queen Victoria of England used CBD.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - CBD (cannabidiol)

Ladies, it’s time we medicate like queens!

In 1890, Queen Victoria of England was prescribed CBD-rich cannabis by Sir J. Russell Reynolds to help alleviate her menstrual cramps.

He wrote, “When pure and administered carefully, [cannabis[ is one of the most valuable medicines we possess.”

Looks like someone was ahead of his time! You go, Sir J. Russell Reynolds!

3. CBD won’t get you high.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - CBD (cannabidiol)

A common misconception about CBD is that because it comes from cannabis, you can get totally baked with it.

But fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on what you want to get out of your experience, CBD is non-psychoactive.

This means that CBD won’t affect your mental processes.

So then you may be wondering, if CBD doesn’t affect your mental state, how does it work to improve anxiety, psychosis, cravings, and even your general mood without giving you some sort of cerebral experience?
The answer is that CBD works “behind the scenes”, if you will, to help to alleviate your issues. While it does impact our psyche, it doesn’t do it in the same way that smoking a joint will.

4. CBD is not always best by itself.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - CBD (cannabidiol)

But let’s back it up a little bit.

If you thought there were just THC and CBD, you’re about to get your mind blown.

There are over 400 compounds in cannabis, and they ALL work together to have a synergistic effect on the body and mind.

This phenomenon is known as the Entourage Effect. Mounting evidence supports that substances may be more effective in their whole and natural state, especially when it comes to medical uses.

5. CBD might be able to fight cancer.

AMC - Alternative Medical Center - AMC blog - CBD (cannabidiol)

A recent study from the National Cancer Institute has shown that CBD (along with THC) is effective in helping alleviate associated symptoms of cancer treatment, AND it may also have properties that damage and/or destroy tumor cells!

The case study was done on breast cancer patients.

The study explained that, “CBD inhibited the survival of both estrogen receptor-positive and estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer cell lines, inducing apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner while having little effect on nontumorigenic mammary cells.”

Basically, this means that CBD was able to destroy the bad cells while maintaining health in the good cells! Amazing!

At Alternative Medical Center, we typically have lots of CBD goodies for you to choose from. Just pop on in and check out our selection!

The 10 Best Weed Strains for Anxiety in 2019

The 10 Best Weed Strains for Anxiety in 2019

If I had a superhero name, it would be Anxiety Girl, because I am able to jump to the worst conclusion in a single bound!

But really though, anxiety affects all of us. Some of us more than others.

I always appreciate when there’s an all-natural remedy to my anxiety woes which is why I put together this list of the best weed strains for anxiety in 2019.

1. Grandaddy Purple (GDP)

Granddaddy Purple - best weed strains - Alternative Medical Center - AMC

Grandaddy Purple (or GDP) is one of the best cannabis strains for treating anxiety because of its lovely balance of cerebral and physical effects.

This heavy indica is also perfect for combating pain, stress, insomnia, appetite loss, and a number of other pesky issues.

This is definitely a nighttime strain, as its powers of relaxation are impressive.

2. Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

Pineapple Express is one of the best cannabis strains for creative escapes to combat anxiety.

This hard-hitting hybrid is sativa-dominant which means it’ll chill you out, but will still provide a long-lasting invigorating buzz perfect for daytime.

If your favorite way to abolish anxiety is to get creative, this is the perfect strain to kick off your crafty day.

3. AK-47

AK 47 - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

Okay, so the name may be doing the opposite for your anxiety than you probably want it to.

But try not to let the name fool you.

This is definitely one of the best weed strains to obliterate negative vibes.

This award-winning strain is known for its sativa-dominant hybrid buzz that often provides a long-lasting head high that maintains a sense of mental clarity and opens the door for creative, positive thinking.

4. Headband

Headband - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

If you feel anxiety in your temples, or in your head, you’ll definitely want to keep reading.

Headband is one of the best weed strains for physical anxiety because many Headband explorers report that the effects of this strain create a slight pressure around the crown of their head. Kind of like, well, a headband.

This relaxing strain is a go-to for anyone combating stress, anxiety, and/or pain.

5. Blue Cheese

Blue Cheese - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

Another fantastic end-of-the-day strain, Blue Cheese is yet another heavy indica that has proven to be one of the best weed strains for alleviating anxiety.

Not only does this strain do wonders for stress relief, but most of Blue Cheese explorers report feelings of relaxation, euphoria, and straight up happiness.

And if those three things aren’t a remedy for anxiety on their own, then I don’t know what is!

6. Purple Urkle

Purple Urkle - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

Anyone else love to sleep their anxiety away? Me too.

For those of us like-minded folks, Purple Urkle is definitely among the best weed strains for smoking yourself into a peaceful and anxiety-free slumber.

This dreamy strain is a favorite among anyone looking to evaporate their anxiety, along with treating insomnia or sleep-related issues and achieving full-body pain relief.

7. Fire OG

Fire OG - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

Out of all of the OG strains, this is one is definitely one of the strongest.

Which makes it among one of the best weed strains for anxiety.

Fire OG is a true hybrid strain and a cross between OG Kush and San Fernando Valley OG Kush F3.

Even though this strain is an OG, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a strong indica. In fact, some Fire OG explorers have reported there being distinctly sativa effects mixed in with the relaxing indica effects.

8. AC/DC

AC/DC - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

This strain is naturally high in THC, but also naturally high in CBD.

AC/DC is one of the best weed strains for treating anxiety because of its unique 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD.

Both of these compounds working in tandem have proven beneficial effects among many of AC/DC’s fans.

We recommend this strain for winding down during a relaxing night in, a post-workout chill, or for falling into a blissful sleep.

9. Strawberry Cough

Strawberry Cough - best weed strains - AMC - Alternative Medical Center

Strawberry Cough is one of the best weed strains for treating anxiety, and specifically, social anxiety.

This is a sativa strain, so it has a lot of potential to uplift your mood, keep you motivated and focused, but also relaxed enough to let your anxiety float away.

One of these nine best weed strains can help keep your anxiety at bay.

Weed Poems: 3 Famous Poems Interpreted with Cannabis in Mind

Weed Poems: 3 Famous Poems Interpreted with Cannabis in Mind

What’s the point of art and poetry if not to interpret your own meaning to it?

Part of the human condition is our unending desire to assign meaning to things. The best consequence of that is our ability to create art and poetry. That’s why we’ve decided to interpret famous poems to make them sound like weed poems.

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

This excerpt from Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein, to us, seems like it very well could be about weed. The place where the sidewalk ends and before the street begins? Could this be describing a place our boy Shel used to go and to get high? And grass that’s soft and white? How about the trichomes on cannabis flower that give it that crystallized, frosty appearance? And Peppermint wind! It sounds like he could have been smoking the hybrid strain Peppermint Cookies.

After doing some research, this poem was intended to be a message for adults to take the perspective of a child to find joy. In a way, our “weed-terpretation” is almost right in an abstract way. People often claim that using cannabis inspires a child-like wonder within them, which would make this poem by Shel Silverstein fit in as one of the great weed poems.

Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!

Is this excerpt from There Is Another Sky by Emily Dickinson too obvious? According to our interpretation, Mrs. Dickinson may have had her own grow op! Okay, she probably didn’t, but I can still dream. What do you think Emily Dickinson would talk about after you smoked her “unfading flowers” with her? It sounds like she’s describing an experience of heightened perception as she can hear the bee hum. Some high people claim that they can feel the whole earth moving. I think we’ve all been there. This makes this poem fit right in with the rest of the world’s great weed poems.

This homage to nature can easily be interpreted by a cannabis lover as a description of a beautiful cannabis garden.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

This excerpt of Still I Rise by Maya Angelou is a powerful message to those who are trying to bring us down. In our cannabis-infused interpretation, we see this as being a cannabis advocate. Even though there are people and politicians attempting to worsen the stigma on the plant that’s done wonders for many people’s health and livelihoods, we will still overcome. We will come out stronger than ever.

The meaning of this poem has everything to do with self-respect, confidence, and self-esteem. Maya Angelou was also, unbeknownst to some, a cannabis enthusiast herself. She recalled one of her first cannabis experiences at a dinner party, “The food was the best I’d ever tasted. Every morsel was an experience of sheer delight. I lost myself in a haze of sensual pleasure, enjoying not only the tastes but the feel of the food in my mouth, the smells, and the sound of my jaws chewing.”

Only Maya Angelou can make the munchies sound that amazing. And for that, we nominate this poem to be included in the world’s greatest weed poems.

Poetry and art attempt to make sense of our world when there doesn’t seem to be any sense being made. It offers a new perspective, beauty, and inspiration to those who are moved. These poems weren’t really about weed, but they were meant to be discovered and cherished.

There really should be more weed poems in the world though, don’t you think? Cannabis is the source of inspiration for so many artists and authors!
